England captain Leah Williamson revealed she finally felt free to let go of 'anxiety' on the eve of the Lionesses' European Championship opener against France in Zurich. The Arsenal defender, who famously lifted the trophy in 2022, was forced to miss England's first run to a Women's World Cup final two summers ago in Australia after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. 'I've probably held some anxiety, I suppose, up until this moment,' said Williamson, when asked if missing the World Cup and her recovery had given her a new appreciation for this opportunity. 'I wanted to experience another tournament for England, and being away from home is special. It's a bit different to England in 2022, so I'm just taking everything in. I'm very excited. Obviously so much has changed, so I'm intrigued to come back and enjoy that tournament football.' Rhian Wilkinson is confident Wales are ready for their 'watershed moment' on a first major tournament stage at Euro 2025. While few expect Wales, who kick off their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on Saturday evening as the lowest ranked team in the competition, to progress from a daunting group which also includes England and France, Wilkinson believes the game has changed in the country forever. Speaking at her pre-match press conference, she said: 'This is a wonderful team, great people, fantastic footballers, and we're going to be tested against some of the best in the world. 'That's what we've been wanting. To showcase Wales as a country, this team and their talent.' Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with raping two women. The Metropolitan Police said the Ghana international, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium expired on June 30, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following alleged offences between 2021 and 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding: 'He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.' The player, who is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5, is accused of two counts of rape against one woman and three counts of rape against another. The sexual assault allegation relates to a third woman, police added. European champions England launch their defence with a tough Group D opener against France in Zurich. Debutants and group rivals Wales also get under way when they face the Netherlands in Lucerne looking to gain a foothold in the competition. At the Club World Cup, Champions League winners Paris St Germain go head-to-head with Bayern Munich in Atlanta with a semi-final against either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, who meet at the MetLife Stadium, at stake.

Chelsea have beaten Palmeiras to book their Club World Cup semi-final place. Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a well-taken finish but he was upstaged in the second half. Estevao, who will join Chelsea after this tournament, scored a superb equaliser to bring the Brazilians back into the game. With the game seemingly headed for extra time, the Premier League side retook the lead as Malo Gusto's cross took two deflections on its way into the net. PHILADELPHIA, July 4 (Reuters) - An 83rd-minute Weverton own goal from a deflected Malo Gusto cross gave Chelsea a nervy 2-1 win over a spirited Palmeiras side in the Club World Cup quarter-finals at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday. Cole Palmer also got on the scoresheet in the first half for Chelsea, who move on to face more Brazilian opposition in Fluminense in New York on Tuesday with a place in the final on the line. Palmeiras roared back after halftime with teenage winger Estevao, who is soon to join Chelsea, equalising in the 53rd minute with a stunning strike from a tight angle. "Tough game as we expected," said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. "First half, I think we were a little bit better compared to the second half, we controlled the game much better. "But then they scored and the game changed but at the end we scored and I think we deserved to win. Congratulations to the players, because they have been very good." Chelsea started the match well despite missing key defensive midfield duo Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, with 21-year-old Andrey Santos making his first start some two and a half years after joining the club. They controlled possession and repeatedly threatened through Pedro Neto, who caused chaos for Palmeiras defence down the right flank. Palmer struck in the 16th minute, receiving a pass from Trevoh Chalobah on the edge of the box and gliding past three defenders with ease before dispatching a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner. Despite their dominance, Chelsea squandered several opportunities, including Christopher Nkunku's glaring miss in the 34th minute when he blasted over with only goalkeeper Weverton to beat. Palmeiras, missing key defenders Joaquin Piquerez, Gustavo Gomez and Murilo, struggled to contain Chelsea's fluid attack in the first half but emerged from the break with renewed energy. They nearly equalised when Bruno Fuchs headed narrowly wide from a corner before Estevao worked his magic with an effort that should be a strong candidate for goal of the tournament so far. The 18-year-old showcased his immense talent by cutting in from the right, gliding past Levi Colwill and smashing an unstoppable shot from a tight angle that flew over keeper Robert Sanchez and off the underside of the crossbar. Just when Palmeiras looked at their most dangerous, though, Chelsea found the winner down the other end. Gusto found space down the left and his attempted cross deflected off defender Fuchs and wrongfooted Weverton, the ball bouncing off the goalkeeper's back and into the net to end Palmeiras dreams of an all-Brazilian semi-final.

PSX nears 132,000 as bulls charge on

The market's upward momentum was driven by strong institutional buying, fuelled by fresh equity allocations, as reflected in data from the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL). Among the top gainers, Bank Alfalah Limited, MCB Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, and Meezan Bank Limited made notable contributions, adding a combined 1,289 points to the index. "Stocks closed bullish at a new all-time high as investors weighed the rupee recovery and SBP FX reserves reaching $19.87 billion amid improved inflows and political stability," said Ahsan Mehanti, Managing Director of Arif Habib Corp. Falling government bond yields and investor speculation ahead of major earnings announcements due next week also played a catalyst role in the record close at the PSX, he added. According to AHL, the KSE-100 Index closed Friday with a rise of 0.97%. Out of the traded stocks, 60 advanced while 37 declined. Major contributors to the index included UBL (+5.7%), HBL (+5.55%), and Systems Limited (+4.68%). On the downside, FFC (-2.15%), PPL (-1.57%), and Engro Holdings (-0.83%) weighed on the index. Notably, listed companies on the PSX distributed a record Rs848.9 billion in cash dividends during FY25, reflecting a 23% year-on-year increase. With 130,000 points now forming a strong support level, further gains are expected in the coming week. At the close of trading, the KSE-100 Index surged by 1,262.41 points, or 0.97%, to settle at 131,949.07. Topline Securities noted in its market review that the KSE-100 Index largely traded in the positive zone during the session, closing at 131,949 (up 0.97%). The upward trend was attributed to institutional buying driven by new allocations to equity funds, as indicated by NCCPL data. United Bank Limited (UBL), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Systems Limited (SYS), Bank Al Habib Limited (BAHL), MCB, National Bank Pakistan (NBP), and Meezan Bank Limited (MEBL) made the highest positive contributions, collectively adding 1,289 points to the index. In other developments, Sazgar Engineering Works Limited (SAZEW) reported its June 2025 sales, with 4-wheeler sales at 1,349 units (up 47% month-on-month and 2.55 times year-on-year), taking FY25 total sales to 10,844 units — double from the previous year. Muhammad Hasan Ather of JS Global noted that the KSE-100 Index closed the session on a strong note, gaining 1,262 points to settle at 131,949. Broad-based buying was observed across key sectors, particularly autos, banks, and power. Investor sentiment remained upbeat, supported by improved macroeconomic indicators and expectations of further monetary easing. Overall trading volume stood at 733.1 million shares, down from 899.8 million in the previous session. The value of shares traded during the day was Rs34.9 billion. Shares of 473 companies were traded. Of these, 255 closed higher, 177 declined, and 41 remained unchanged. WorldCall Telecom led the turnover with trades worth Rs58.3 million, losing Rs0.04 to close at Rs1.55. It was followed by Bank Makramah with Rs35.8 million shares, down Rs0.03 to Rs5.12, and Treet Corp with Rs29.7 million shares, up Rs1.07 to close at Rs23.93. Foreign investors sold shares worth Rs655.5 million, according to NCCPL data.
